International Yoga Day 2022: Yoga for Humanity

International Yoga Day 2022 is celebrated on 21 June. Yoga day is a day for all of us to understand the importance of yoga and remember the various advantages that it has on physical and mental health. The national yoga day was first proposed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 21 June was set as yoga day date. Yoga brings all of us joy, health and peace at all times and provides a balance between our inner consciousness and the external world. Yoga has been a part of our lives for a very long time, almost since our ancient history and yet it has gained prominence over the past few years after the emergence of the COVID 19 pandemic.

WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is one of the ancient practices that originated in India that gives us physical, mental and spiritual advantages. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word join or unites; which symbolises the unity of the body and consciousness. The meaning given by Narendra Modi is the best way to explain what yoga is. “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action… a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and nature.” Yoga is more than just a physical activity, it helps us calm ourselves down and relax when we feel tired, mentally or physically.

IMPORTANCE OF YOGA

Yoga when practiced daily can be one of the most important and advantageous practices in our life. Yoga helps us with increased flexibility, muscle strength and body tone. It also helps people with various health problems; and helps in improving respiration, energy and vitality. Yoga helps us gain balance in all aspects of our life; it can even help us gain balance in our relationships with others and with the world.

With the oncoming of the pandemic, the problems that people had kept increasing, people were burdened with the pressure of the lockdown and the fear of contracting the disease. Yoga helped them in allaying their fears and anxiety. More and more people have turned to yoga to help them relax and stay healthy. It helps us in being mindful and disciplined.  Doing morning yoga daily can be extremely helpful to us at all times in our life. Morning yoga is beneficial as it not only helps us carry the rest of our morning in the best way possible, but we also get a positive outlook to everything we do on that day.

THEME OF INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY 2022

Every year the UN celebrates the yoga day with a different theme each year to mark the importance of yoga in our lives. The theme for the International Yoga Day 2022 is “Yoga for Humanity”. The theme signifies the role that yoga played in the wellness of the humanity during the pandemic and how it helped all of them remain healthy and overcome the effects that the virus had in their lives.

The theme for the International yoga day 2021 was “Yoga for well-being” which was necessary for the mental and physical well-being as the after effects of the pandemic were still seen in the people. Yoga can help foster a sense of unity and harmony and thus help the humanity in gaining everything they want. According to the UN, yoga played a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of the COVID 19 patients in quarantine. People used yoga as a way to remain healthy and fresh. The theme thus comes into play here, reminding everyone of the importance of yoga in our lives.
