Existence and Being
Existence and Being is a art. A mother was hurt and shocked to hear her son telling lies. So, she took the boy aside and told him about the perils of telling lies. She told him that, “When you tell a lie, a black man with red eyes, having a horn on his head will drag you from your bed in the middle of the night and punish you badly. Hereafter, I am sure you won’t tell lies.
“No mother, hereafter I will not tell lies”, assured the son and continued to say, “More than me you are a bigger liar”.
Error on the part of one in lying cannot be corrected by another by committing the same error. One has to understand this and be alert.
Why do people tell lies? What do people achieve by telling lies? Can you see that the efforts needed to protect one from being caught as a liar causes more tension and causes unnecessary burden of remembering one’s lies and that isn’t it a strain on one’s brain? One fills the mind with unnecessary thoughts, worries, hurts, and lies and this will restrict the space available for any creative act.
People tend to increase their knowledge. E.g. In the east, there is a distinction between ‘knowledge’ and ‘Being’ and the emphasis is to increase one’s ‘Being’. With the transformation of knowledge into ‘Being’, knowledge will not be limited to information. So both knowledge and ‘Being’ should be firmly placed in the track of transformation.
We can understand that there are different levels of knowledge, but remarkably only few can understand that there are different levels of ‘Being’. ‘Being’ means presence i.e. your presence as a good, pure, inspiring and transparent essence. One should not confuse ‘Existence’ with ‘Being’. The stone, plant and a man exists, but they all exist quite differently. It is here the idea of ‘Being’ comes in. e.g. the ‘Being’ of a plant, the ‘Being’ of a stone, the ‘Being’ of an animal, the ‘Being’ of a man, the divine ‘Being’ are all at different levels.
While ‘Being’ is always from the origin, Existence is from the birth. Let us take the ‘Being’ of an animal. All animal has existed from birth. A cat exits, a dog exists, and a horse exists. They have a common existence. But ‘Being’ of a cat, ‘Being’ of a dog, ‘Being’ of a horse are quite different. The ‘Being’ is not from birth but from conception.
Just deeply introspect on this. This ‘Being’ is an evolving essence, an evolving presence. So too, the ‘Being’ of yours and mine.
If a person gets hurt because someone makes an unpleasant statement, it only shows the level of one’s ‘Being’. But if one can forgive the person who has caused the hurt, it shows the level of one’s ‘Being’ at a different or higher level.
If one is selfish, it shows one’s ‘Being’ at some level. But if one were to serve the ‘other’ with love and goodness, it shows another level of ‘Being’. It is not a matter of judgment but a matter of clarity leading to the opportunity of growth.
To grow up is one thing and to grow old is yet another thing. Growing up involves adding life to your years. Growing old involves adding years to your life.
So, are you working on your ‘Being’? How should one work on the ‘Being”? It’s a vast topic. But do not stop the question and try to find an answer. Resolve right now to make a beginning to transform and support the process of transformation in your daily life.
