World Food Safety Day: Safer food, Better health
World Food Safety Day; is it really necessary to have a day to manage foodborne diseases and to remember the ones affected by it? This question may have crossed all our minds at some point when we heard that there is a food safety day; but it is extremely important as it draws attention to the various diseases caused by the lack of food safety and the risks it poses to public health.
What is World Food Safety Day?
The World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year on 7 June to ‘draw attention and mobilize action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health’. Safe food is one of the most critical guarantors for good health. We all know that unsafe food is the main cause for many of the diseases like cholera, typhoid, etc., and also contribute to poor health conditions.
The campaign this year focuses on transforming the food systems and the public health departments to deliver better health in a sustainable manner to prevent foodborne diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are jointly calling on everyone to join the World Food Safety Day campaign and ensure safe food for all and better health conditions.
World Food Safety Day Theme 2022
The theme for the food safety day 2022 is “Safer food, better health”. With the deteriorating conditions of the present time, immunity plays a very important role in all of our lives, and the only way to ensure it is by eating safe and healthy food. Food hygiene is a must if we want to remain healthy and safe. The World Food Safety Day’s theme highlights the role that safe, nutritional food plays in ensuring human health and well-being. All of us play an important role in food safety and food hygiene, whether we grow, process, transport, sell, prepare or serve food. Food safety day can be seen as a day to remind us that food safety is in our hands and we have to ensure that we are eating safe food.
The theme for the year 2022 is not very different from the theme for the World Food Safety Day 2021, which was, “Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow.” This shows that every year the goal is the same, to ensure that food safety is followed by all and like the World Food Safety Day 2021; we strive to make the food safe and hygiene.
Challenges faced in Food Safety
In today’s world, there are so many challenges that we have to face in food safety and food hygiene. With the increased use of globalization we see that food from different parts of the world is combined and processed to prepare a very new dish, in ways that were not possible in the last ten years. We also see an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which makes it even more difficult in treating foodborne diseases.
Food fraud is another challenge we have to overcome, to ensure food hygiene. In many hotels and restaurants, we see the use of expired food; the consumer is deceived about the quality of food and the contents of the food. Consumers can often be deceived as most of them are unaware of such practices and get easily fooled by the fraudsters. One way to overcome this problem is to inform the public health departments of this discrepancy and wait for the legal action to be taken. The World Food Safety Day helps in educating us about these problems and how to overcome them.
How to ensure food hygiene?
Food hygiene must be one of our topmost priorities to ensure food safety. WHO’s five keys to safer food can be used to determine the quality of the food we consume. Keep clean food only; separate raw and cooked food; cook thoroughly; keep food at safe temperatures and use safe water and raw materials. Following these methods can help us ensure a safe intake of food.
The Public Health Act also ensures that the food safety measures are taken. This act was aimed at combating filthy urban living conditions that led to diseases like cholera and typhus, and caused many other health threats. Six states have their own public health acts, nine are formulating one while eight have no plans at all for one says the Ministry of Health and Family affairs. This act is important as it helps in curbing the obstacles faced by food safety in today’s world.
With the recent developments in the health and safety conditions, it is important that we remember that food safety is not just a necessity in our life, but also an integral part in our ecosystem. World Food Safety Day can be useful in helping us understand the importance of food hygiene and staying healthy, and to remember that “Safer food, better health”.
