An Ode to My Mother – Swami Sukhabodhananda
Every year on the 8th of March, we celebrate ‘International Women’s Day’ to acknowledge the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women across the world. But this day is not just about women achievers. This is a day we appreciate the efforts of every woman! Organizations, large and small, come together to show how valuable women are to society. At homes, mothers, daughters and wives, are celebrated for their contributions to the family. Since my loving mother is one of the most influential women in my life, I honor this day with an ode to my mother.
“Oh! mother, my very inspiring soul.
You smother me with your divine love and affection,
your worldly wisdom has transformed my life,
you close the inner doors of my foolishness with fond tender care.
My heart beats in the garden of love,
making flowers bloom out of season everywhere.
You bathe me moment to moment, in the river of thy love,
You make me realize that the rainbow of emotions,
contains the beauty of life,
Unto this mother, I express my love and affection,
my loving mother, you turn every action into a contribution.
Every emotion of yours is an act of upliftment,
my heart beats with the persuasive power of your commitment,
your richness of being enriches my very soul,
my mind draws sustenance from your very inspiring soul.
From seed to son, I became in the shelter of your womb,
From small to big, you nurtured me with your selfless love and affection.
My ears imbibed wisdom from your lips, my loving mother.
I learnt lessons of life from your kindly acts,
Your love and affection made me capable in the world,
Your memory beckons me like a rainbow,
beautiful, but beyond the words I command.
Now, my loving mother, I remember everything you were,
I love what you did, cherish the way you looked,
I still savor the tastes of the goodies you cooked,
Oh! Mother, how much, how very much I wish,
I could do for you all that I never did.
My heart beats for my mother,
every word falls short of my appreciation.
I have travelled the world and seen many women,
you my loving mother, are the mystic rose,
Your fragrance makes me shed my darkness in thy light,
You remain ever my inner lamp, shining in the night.
You enlighten my way and guide me through my turmoil,
You are my silver cloud, a very inspiring soul.
You shower me with your generosity and hold me in dignity,
To such a loving mother I offer my gratitude as a garland,
My burden lightens at the remembrance of your approaching steps,
My heart beats rejoice in the echoes of your comforting words,
In tiredness, recalling your care and support rejuvenates my soul,
my sorrow vanishes when I recount the countless ways you eased my pain,
I feel fully fed as I think of the love and affection that went into your efforts.
You gave me roots that hold me firm to the culture of my land.
You gave me wings that made me fly to distant shores with my message,
I offer myself to you, my loving mother, everything I have and am,
my life, limbs, and every achievement, as worship to you.”
This is an ode to my mother special on this Women’s Day 2022.
Do you remember the way Maa Durga transformed herself into many forms, depending on the need and situation she was presented with? Women mirror this trait in everyday life, smoothly transitioning from one role to the other: wife, loving mother, friend, sister. This ability of women is something we should treasure, appreciate and celebrate.
Women’s day was once celebrated to inspire women and promote the cause of social equality. But social work begins at home. Women’s day is a day to appreciate and respect all the women who are the essence of our lives. Use this day, to acknowledge the contributions of the women in your life.
Let us show our gratitude to all the women in our lives and acknowledge their worth every single day. Take action and voice your responsibility towards promoting a better world for women. Women are not lesser than men in any way. Let us all stand up together and be equal in this world.
Happy Women’s Day to All.
