Let Go of Worry
Have you observed your mind? Did you notice that the mind is always focused on what it feels is missing?
Man or woman, the human tendency is to focus on what we do not have rather than what we have. Doing this makes us miserable! A day of worrying is more tiring than a day of work. Even then, we spend so much time worrying and feeling miserable. In the end, there is little time left for joy. But the art of wise living teaches us something different. It reminds us that wise living is rejoicing. It is optimizing what you have and working on what you do not have. When we operate from this space, life becomes effortless and functions smoothly.
Most of the time, we are carrying just a load of feathers on our head but think that we are carrying heavy iron. Therefore, we end up suffering because of this illusion. Our worry is like this too. We think about future problems and keep worrying. But remember, as you think so you become.
Let me share something that once happened with me. Once, when I was traveling with my student, we were both robbed. My student started worrying and whipping herself with negative self-talk that she is always unlucky, and that unpleasant things happen to her every time. To make her understand life better, I narrated the following story-
A young couple was driving in a hilly forest area. The curves of the road were intimidating but at the same time, thrilling. When the car turned a dark corner, four armed men suddenly appeared in front of the car and stopped it. The robbers dragged the couple out, blindfolded them, took them inside the forest, and robbed them. Then, they forced the couple to march forward with their hands tied. Finally, the couple was asked to stop. The tired and worried victims were led to what they were told was the edge of a cliff. The robbers instructed them to hold on tightly to an end of the rope and hang from it. “If you leave the rope, you will fall, and the impact will crush you to pieces,” they warned. After saying this the robbers left.
The worried couple started thinking about what they should do. The woman started crying. The man said, “I have read somewhere that worry is like a rocking chair, it keeps us busy but leads us nowhere. So let us focus on what to do next.”
The couple knew they could not hold on to the rope forever. Seeing that they had no other option, they decided to leave the rope in a relaxed way. “Let us feel that we are going to the Lord’s abode and with joy let us leave the rope,” said the woman. “Let us end our suffering with surrender to the Lord,” said the man. They left the rope together and fell down. But contrary to their fears, they landed on the ground in seconds and without a big impact. Untying the blindfold, they found they had fallen from a height of about five feet and not from a cliff. In order to gain time and escape, the robbers had lied to them. They both rejoiced at the spontaneous “letting go” that had happened. What they had gained was so liberating, that they did not worry about what they lost to the robbers.
Did you like this story? Can you let go of your worries similarly? Can you choose to focus on what you have and stop paying attention to what you do not have? If you can, let us know how you felt when you ‘let-go’ of your worry.
